Microsorum pteropus 'Broad Leaf', also known as Broadleaf Java Fern, is a popular and robust variety of Java fern prized for its wide, paddle-shaped leaves. It is a durable and easy-to-care-for plant that can create a lush, natural look in freshwater aquariums.
General care
The Broadleaf Java Fern is an epiphytic plant, which means it should not be buried in the substrate.
- Planting: Attach the rhizome (the horizontal stem) to a hard surface such as driftwood or rocks using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Burying the rhizome can cause it to rot and kill the plant.
- Lighting: It thrives in low-to-medium light conditions. High light levels can burn the leaves and lead to algae growth.
- Water parameters: Broadleaf Java Fern is highly adaptable and tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, including varying pH and hardness. The ideal temperature range is typically 68–82°F (20–28°C).
- Fertilization: It absorbs nutrients from the water column, so it does not require a nutrient-rich substrate. While it can survive without added fertilizer, supplementing with a liquid fertilizer can promote faster growth and vibrant foliage.
- Water flow: Moderate water flow is beneficial, as it helps distribute nutrients and keeps debris off the leaves.
Propagation and pruning
- Propagation: The plant naturally propagates by growing new plantlets from its leaves. These small plantlets can be separated from the parent leaf once they have established roots and then attached elsewhere in the tank. You can also propagate it by dividing the rhizome.
- Pruning: As a slow-growing plant, it does not require frequent pruning. However, older, damaged, or yellowing leaves can be trimmed off at the rhizome.
Common problems
- Java fern melt: If the plant's leaves start turning brown, black, or mushy, it may be suffering from "Java fern melt," which can be caused by burying the rhizome, unstable water parameters, or insufficient nutrients, especially potassium.
- Brown spots: The appearance of small black or brown dots on the underside of leaves is normal and is a sign of spore production, not a disease.
