A Mosura shrimp is a specific, high-grade pattern of the Caridina dwarf shrimp, most notably associated with Crystal Red or Taiwan Bee varieties. Instead of having a banded pattern, a Mosura shrimp is almost entirely white, with colored markings limited to its head or, in some cases, its tail
The name "Mosura" comes from the Japanese word for the moth-like kaiju character Mothra, and the term refers to the extensive white coloration of the shrimp. Because they are high-grade, Mosura shrimp are sensitive to changes in water chemistry and require precise care, making them suitable for experienced aquarists.
Appearance
The specific markings define different types of Mosura patterns, with some of the highest-rated including:
- Mosura Crown: Features a crown-like red or black mark on the head.
- Mosura Flower: Displays a flower-like pattern on the head.
- Mosura Heart: Shows a heart-shaped marking on the top of the head.
- Shadow Mosura: A Taiwan Bee variant with a black or white mask-like pattern on the head and a blue body.
Care and tank setup
Due to the extensive selective breeding involved, Mosura shrimp are more fragile than lower-grade shrimp and demand specific water parameters and a stable environment.
-
Water parameters: They require soft, acidic water, which is often achieved by using an active buffering substrate and remineralized reverse osmosis (RO) water.
- Temperature: 62–74°F (17–23°C).
- pH: 5.5–6.8, although some variants prefer a narrower range.
- GH: 4–6 dGH.
- KH: 0–1 dKH.
- TDS: 100–180 ppm.
- Tank setup: A mature, stable tank with a sponge filter, live plants, and plenty of biofilm is ideal for their health and successful breeding.
- Feeding: They are scavengers that will graze on biofilm and algae, and their diet should be supplemented with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and other foods.
- Tank mates: A species-only tank is highly recommended to protect these sensitive and valuable shrimp.
Breeding
Breeding Mosura shrimp is a goal for many advanced shrimp keepers.
- Process: Like other Caridina shrimp, females carry eggs for about a month before they hatch into miniature versions of the adults.
- Genetics: Breeding for the Mosura pattern requires selective breeding of the highest-grade individuals. The offspring of high-grade shrimp are not guaranteed to be high-grade themselves, which is why these patterns are difficult to perfect and command high prices.
