The OB Fire Red Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara sp. hybrid) is a man-made variety of African cichlid that combines the distinctive orange-blotched (OB) pattern with the brilliant red coloration of the Fire Red Peacock. It is not a wild species but a product of selective breeding in the aquarium trade, offering a unique and vibrant addition to an African cichlid tank. 

Tank and water requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a group of OB Fire Reds, but a 75-gallon or larger tank is ideal, especially if housing multiple males. Larger tanks help disperse aggression and maintain stable water conditions.
  • Substrate: Use a fine, sandy substrate, as these cichlids are bottom-sifters. Coarse gravel can injure their gills.
  • Filtration: A robust filtration system is essential to handle their bioload and maintain clean, alkaline water conditions.
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C).
    • pH: 7.8–8.6.
    • Water changes: Perform regular partial water changes (around 25–30% weekly) to keep nitrates low.
  • Decorations: Aquascape with plenty of stacked rocks, caves, and crevices to create territories and hiding places. Leave plenty of open swimming space in the center. 

Diet and feeding
  • Omnivorous diet: 
    OB Fire Red Peacocks
     are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet.
  • Food types: A combination of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes is recommended as a staple. Supplement with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms to enhance coloration.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed small amounts once or twice daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a couple of minutes to prevent overfeeding. 

Temperament and tank mates
  • Semi-aggressive: They are generally more peaceful than mbuna cichlids but can be territorial, especially toward other males and during breeding.
  • Social dynamics: Maintain a male-to-female ratio of at least 1:3 to disperse aggression among males.
  • Tank mates: They are best kept with other similarly sized and tempered Peacock cichlids (Aulonocara species) and Haps (Haplochromine cichlids). 

Breeding
  • Maternal mouthbrooders: The female carries the fertilized eggs and fry in her mouth for protection, typically for about three weeks.
  • Spawning behavior: Males will court a female and dig a small pit in the sand for spawning.
  • Raising fry: Once the female releases the free-swimming fry, you can move them to a nursery tank to protect them from being eaten by other fish
