The Red Dragon Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a visually stunning and hardy freshwater fish known for its contrasting coloration and distinctive "dragon-scale" pattern. Males display a bright red tail and fins against a metallic silver or bluish body, while females are less colorful. They are peaceful, social, and active, making them a popular choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Tank requirements
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is suitable for a small school, but 20 gallons or larger is recommended, especially if breeding.
  • Decor: A planted tank is ideal, as guppies appreciate vegetation and benefit from hiding places. Use live plants like Java Moss, Anubias, or floating plants such as Water Lettuce.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system, such as a sponge filter, is recommended, as guppies do not like strong currents.
  • Lid: A secure lid is essential because guppies are known to jump.

Water parameters
Red Dragon Guppies thrive in stable, clean, and slightly hard, alkaline water, which enhances their health and coloration.

Parameter  Range
Temperature 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH 6.8–8.0 (with a target of 7.2–7.5)
Hardness (GH) 8–12 dGH (moderate to hard)

Diet and feeding
As omnivores, Red Dragon Guppies require a varied diet for optimal health and vibrant color.
  • Staple: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food.
  • Supplement: Offer small, protein-rich live or frozen foods regularly, such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
  • Vegetable matter: Include spirulina-based foods or occasional blanched vegetables like spinach or peas.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed small portions two to three times daily, only as much as they can consume in a few minutes.

Behavior and tank mates
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, active, and social fish. It's recommended to keep a ratio of 2–3 females for every male to prevent males from excessively harassing females.
  • Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful, similarly sized fish that won't nip at their long fins, such as:
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Mollies and Platies
    • Neon Tetras and Harlequin Rasboras
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers and will breed readily if males and females are present. Providing dense plants offers cover for new fry from adults, who may otherwise eat them.
  • Lifespan: With proper care and stable conditions, they typically live for 2 to 3 years
