The name "Red Flush" can refer to two different species of cichlid from Africa's Lake Malawi with distinct characteristics and care needs. It is important to know which one you have to provide proper care. 

1. German Red Flush Peacock (Aulonocara hansbaenschi "Red Flush")
This is a popular and striking peacock cichlid known for its mix of vibrant red and blue coloration. 

Tank and water requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of 55 gallons is recommended for a small group, with 75 gallons or more being ideal.
  • Substrate: A fine sand substrate is best, as they are bottom-sifters that enjoy sifting for food.
  • Water parameters: Maintain a high pH of 7.8–8.6 and a temperature between 76–82°F (24–28°C) to mimic their native Lake Malawi habitat.
  • Decorations: Provide plenty of rocks, caves, and crevices to create territories and hiding spots. 

Diet and feeding
  • Omnivorous diet: They require a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, spirulina-based foods, and frozen meaty foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed small amounts once or twice daily. 

Temperament and tank mates
  • Semi-aggressive: They are territorial but generally less aggressive than mbuna cichlids.
  • Social dynamics: To minimize aggression, keep a ratio of one male to three or four females.
  • Tank mates: They can be kept with other similarly sized and tempered peacocks and haps from Lake Malawi. 

2. Red Flush Emperor Cichlid (Lethrinops parvidens)
This is a species of sand-dwelling cichlid found in Lake Malawi. While sometimes referred to as "red flush," it is less common in the aquarium trade than the peacock variant. 

Appearance
  • Coloration: Can display a mix of colors, but may not be as intensely red as the peacock variant.
  • Size: Grows to a length of about 5.5 inches. 

Tank and water requirements
  • Tank size: A tank of at least 300 liters (approximately 75 gallons) is recommended.
  • Substrate: Requires a fine sand substrate, as they are sand-sifting cichlids.
  • Water parameters: Requires the same high pH and hard water conditions as other Lake Malawi cichlids. 

Diet and feeding
  • Carnivorous diet: As sand-sifters, they eat small invertebrates found in the substrate. 

Temperament and tank mates
  • Territorial: Males can be aggressive toward conspecifics.
  • Tank mates: Should be kept with other peaceful non-mbuna cichlids. Mbuna species should be avoided due to their different dietary needs
