Red Rili shrimp (Neocaridina davidi 'Red Rili') are a popular and hardy freshwater dwarf shrimp, valued for their distinctive "rili" pattern. This pattern consists of red coloration on the head and tail, with a clear or translucent section in the middle of the body. As a color variant of the red cherry shrimp, they are a great choice for beginner aquarists
Appearance
- Coloration: The vibrancy of the red and the clarity of the midsection vary by grade, with higher-grade shrimp having more intense and opaque red areas and a starker transition to the clear midsection.
- Size: Adult Red Rili shrimp typically reach a maximum size of 1.2 to 1.5 inches.
- Sexing: Females are generally larger and more colorful than males, with a more pronounced curved underbelly.
Care and tank setup
Red Rili shrimp share the same easy-to-care-for requirements as other Neocaridina varieties.
- Tank size: A 5- to 10-gallon tank is a good starting size, as larger volumes of water are more stable.
-
Water parameters: Stability is more important than specific values, and they are tolerant of a wide range of conditions.
- Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C), with 72–78°F being a popular range.
- pH: 6.5–8.0.
- Hardness: They prefer moderately hard water to assist with healthy molting.
- Filtration: Sponge filters are highly recommended to provide gentle filtration and protect shrimplets from being sucked in.
- Aquascaping: A planted tank with plenty of moss, driftwood, and leaf litter provides hiding places and surfaces for foraging on biofilm. A dark substrate can help their colors stand out.
- Feeding: They are omnivores that primarily graze on naturally occurring algae and biofilm. Supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.
Breeding
Red Rili shrimp are prolific breeders in stable, well-maintained tanks.
- Process: Females carry eggs ("berried") under their tails for about 30 days until they hatch into miniature, fully formed shrimplets.
- Maintaining Color: To maintain the vibrant rili pattern, it is best to keep them in a species-only tank with other Red Rili shrimp. If mixed with other color variations of Neocaridina, their offspring can revert to a dull, wild-type coloration.
Tank mates
- Peaceful community: Red Rili shrimp are peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive, small fish, like micro rasboras or pygmy corydoras.
- Compatibility: They can also coexist with other invertebrates, such as snails. However, it is crucial to avoid mixing them with other Neocaridina color variants to prevent undesirable crossbreeding.
