Key care guidelines for red swordtails
  • Tank size: A minimum of 20 gallons is recommended for a small school.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful, but males can become territorial. Keeping a ratio of at least two or three females per male is recommended to minimize conflict.
  • Diet: An omnivore that readily accepts a mix of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
  • Compatibility: Good tank mates include other peaceful, medium-sized fish such as platies, mollies, and angelfish.
  • Breeding: They are prolific livebearers, so if you keep both males and females, you can expect them to reproduce. Provide dense vegetation for the fry to hide in to increase their survival rate.
