The "Siamese flying fox" is a common name used for a freshwater fish that is more accurately known as the Siamese algae eater (Crossocheilus oblongus or, historically, C. siamensis). This name is often a point of confusion for aquarium hobbyists because it can be mistaken for the similar-looking, but distinct, true flying fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus)
Aquarium care
For keeping Siamese algae eaters (or "Siamese flying foxes") in an aquarium, here are some key care guidelines:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, as they can grow up to 6 inches long and are very active.
- Social Behavior: They are shoaling fish and are less stressed in groups of three or more. However, they can become territorial as they mature, so a larger tank with hiding places is best for a group.
- Diet: While excellent algae eaters, they require a supplemental diet of high-quality algae wafers, flakes, and fresh vegetables.
- Water Conditions: They prefer warm, well-oxygenated water with moderate to high flow, similar to their native stream habitats.
- Tankmates: They are compatible with many peaceful community fish but can prey on small shrimp.
