Natural habitat and lifecycle
- Indo-Pacific native: G. polyuranodon is found in the rivers and coastal areas of the Indo-Pacific, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea.
- Complex migration: Unlike most moray eels, adults spend the majority of their lives in freshwater environments, like still pools of tropical rainforests. However, they migrate back to marine waters to breed.
- Brackish transition: The young eels, called elvers, are born in the ocean and migrate into freshwater as they mature. During this journey, they spend time in brackish water, such as mangrove forests, before moving further upstream.
Aquarium care
While some aquarists successfully keep this species in pure freshwater, many sources recommend a brackish water setup to ensure its long-term health.
Tank requirements
- Size: A large tank is necessary, with a minimum of 90–125 gallons recommended for adults, which can reach up to 3 feet in length.
-
Water parameters:
- Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature between 75 and 82°F.
- Salinity: If keeping in brackish water, aim for a specific gravity of 1.005–1.015. Acclimation to the desired salinity should be done carefully to avoid shock.
- Decorations: Provide plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, PVC pipes, and sturdy rockwork. This mimics their natural behavior of hiding during the day.
- Secure lid: This species is a talented escape artist and can squeeze through very small gaps. The tank lid must be tight-fitting and completely escape-proof.
Diet and feeding
- Carnivorous diet: As predators, freshwater morays require a meaty diet of protein-rich foods.
- Suggested foods: They readily accept frozen or live shrimp, mussels, squid, and smaller fish.
- Feeding schedule: Feed juveniles every 2–3 days and adults twice a week. To avoid getting bitten, it is recommended to use feeding tongs instead of your hands.
Temperament and tank mates
- Nocturnal and reclusive: These morays are naturally shy and nocturnal, often hiding during the day. However, they can be trained to recognize their keeper over time.
- Predatory nature: They will eat any tank mate small enough to fit in their mouths. Choose companions cautiously and stick to larger, robust species that can handle brackish conditions, such as other large eels, bichirs, or archerfish.
- Potential for aggression: Though generally peaceful toward other large fish, they can be aggressive if harassed. Keeping them in groups with ample space and hiding spots is often successful.
