The name "Triangle Cichlid" most often refers to the Uaru Cichlid (Uaru amphiacanthoides), a large and intelligent South American cichlid from the Amazon River basin. They are known for their distinctive triangular body shape and their peaceful, social nature.

Tank and water requirements
  • Tank size: A minimum of 75 to 100 gallons is required for a pair, but a 125-gallon tank is ideal, especially if housing a group.
  • Substrate: Use a fine, sandy substrate, as they enjoy sifting through it for food.
  • Filtration: A powerful filter is necessary to handle their bioload and maintain pristine water quality, as they are sensitive to poor conditions.
  • Water parameters:
    • Temperature: 78–82°F.
    • pH: 6.0–7.5. Stability is more important than a specific number.
  • Decorations: Provide plenty of driftwood and rocks for cover, but allow for open swimming space. Since they are herbivorous, they will eat most live plants, so opt for very hardy plants or plastic ones if you want foliage.
  • Secure lid: Uaru Cichlids can jump, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.

Diet and feeding
  • Omnivorous diet: Uaru Cichlids are omnivores with a strong preference for plant-based foods. Their coloration can be influenced by diet.
  • Food types: A varied diet is recommended.
    • Staple: High-quality pellets or algae wafers.
    • Vegetables: Blanched vegetables, such as romaine lettuce, spinach, zucchini, and cucumber, should be a significant part of their diet.
    • Supplements: Include occasional protein sources like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
  • Feeding schedule: Feed several small meals throughout the day to support their foraging behavior.

Temperament and tank mates
  • Peaceful and social: Despite their large size, Uaru Cichlids are known for being peaceful and intelligent. They do well in pairs or small groups and can become skittish if kept alone.
  • Tank mates: Choose similarly sized, non-aggressive species. Suitable companions include:
    • Silver dollars
    • Larger tetras
    • Other peaceful cichlids, such as Severums and some Geophagus species
  • Incompatible companions: Avoid keeping them with small fish that could become a meal.

Breeding
  • Substrate spawners: Uaru Cichlids are substrate spawners that lay adhesive eggs on surfaces like flat rocks.
  • Parental care: Both parents care for the eggs and fry, with the fry feeding on a slime secreted from the parents' bodies. Breeding can be challenging
