Yellow rili shrimp are a colorful, selectively bred variety of the dwarf shrimp species Neocaridina davidi. Known for their distinctive "rili" pattern, they feature a vibrant, solid yellow coloration on their head and tail, with a clear or translucent midsection. Their bright appearance makes them a popular and lively addition to freshwater aquariums.

Appearance
  • Coloration: The body has three color bands: a yellow head, a clear midsection, and a yellow tail. Higher-grade individuals have a more opaque, consistent, and vibrant yellow color, while lower-grade shrimp may be more translucent.
  • Size: Adult yellow rili shrimp typically grow to a size of 1 to 1.25 inches (2.5–3 cm), with females being slightly larger and more colorful than males.
  • Grading: As with other shrimp varieties, the quality and intensity of their coloration are used for grading.

Care and tank setup
Yellow rili shrimp are known for being hardy and relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for beginners. They generally require the same care as other Neocaridina shrimp varieties.
  • Tank size: A 5-gallon aquarium is a good starting point for a small colony, but a larger tank of 10 gallons or more offers greater water stability.
  • Water parameters: They thrive in stable water conditions within the following ranges:
    • Temperature: 68–78°F (20–25.5°C)
    • pH: 6.5–8.0
    • Hardness: Moderate to hard water is preferred for healthy molting.
  • Aquascaping: A planted tank with plenty of moss, driftwood, and leaf litter provides hiding places and surfaces for the shrimp to graze on biofilm and algae.
  • Feeding: They are omnivores and will scavenge for food. Their diet should be supplemented with high-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables.
  • Tank mates: They are peaceful and should only be kept with small, non-aggressive fish or other invertebrates like snails. Large or aggressive fish may prey on them. Do not keep them with other Neocaridina species, as interbreeding will result in wild-type offspring.

Breeding
  • Reproduction: Yellow rili shrimp are prolific breeders in a mature and stable aquarium.
  • Breeding process:
    1. A female with a "saddle"—the yellow or green-tinged developing eggs on her back—will molt and release pheromones to signal her readiness to mate.
    2. The male shrimp will then frantically swim to find her.
    3. After mating, the female carries the fertilized eggs, or becomes "berried," under her tail for about 30 days.
    4. The eggs hatch into miniature versions of the adults that can immediately fend for themselves.
  • Maintaining color: To maintain a colony with the brightest yellow coloration, aquarists will selectively breed the best-colored individuals and cull those with undesirable traits or wild coloration.
